TrialPay makes it hard to resist the deal

Online shoppers who cannot decide whether to make their next purchase may be surprised at a new alternative: an offer to get it free.

The offer is not a swindle, nor is it a return to the insanity of the early days of the dot-com boom, when retailers virtually gave away goods to attract buzz and customers. Rather, it is a new marketing method that relies on a web of business relationships to give consumers free goods, as long as they buy something else from a long list of well-known online stores.

The idea comes from TrialPay, a company that has recently gained a following among online businesses and investors. Now that the idea is attracting more well-known retailers, analysts said, consumers could see more free offers in the coming months.

"This is a very strange, unique animal, but I could see where it would work," said Dana Gould, an analyst with Financial Insights, a consultant group based in Massachusetts.

Keep large meatpackers from owning and processing cattle

An intense conflict is being waged in Congress. At stake is the security of U.S. consumers' meat supply. Security is dependent on the structure of our production system. A system where control is distributed among hundreds of thousands of independent livestock producers, geographically dispersed, is more secure than a system concentrated in a few geographic locations and controlled by only a few large multinational meatpackers. Our meat supply, secured by a widely dispersed production structure, is now in jeopardy. By the 1990s, our poultry industry, once characterized by tens of thousands of independent businesses, was reduced to about 50 integrated firms. U.S. hog operations, which numbered 667,000 just 25 years ago, were reduced 90 percent to only 67,000 operations by 2005.Livestock production is now nearly completely controlled by only a handful of meatpackers that have virtually decimated the widely dispersed, family-farm structure of U.S.

Speedo slows down

But this time centrists are shunning the advances of the UMP and making tactical voting deals with the left. "Openness", the clarion call of Mr Sarkozy's first government, now excludes the centre-right.

More than one factor is at play here. First, the economy has recovered sufficiently to bring unemployment down slightly, but not by enough to cope with soaring prices. The state's coffers are empty. Second, Mr Sarkozy's reforms have stalled. He has nibbled at the edges of the 35-hour week, but it is still there in all its glory. The hard bit - pension, health and civil service reform - is still to come. The hyperactive politician called "Speedo" is losing his reputation as a man who gets things done.

Finally, there is the unending soap opera of his personal life.

Campaign manager David Axelrod is now telling reporters that Mr Goolsbee is "basically a volunteer. He's one of the economists Barack talks to. He's not in close and constant contact with the candidate." That would be a shame, as Mr Goolsbee's association with the campaign has long struck me as one of its strongest selling points.

Still, at least there's no sign yet that Mr Goolsbee will be resigning, as Samantha Power did last week after being quoted describing Hillary Clinton as a "monster". And another bright spot, as various wags have noted, is that we can now collectively refer to Mr Obama's troubles with his advisors' gaffes as the Austan/Power Affair.
